Also known as a ULT freezer and minus 80 freezer, an ultra low temperature freezer is a refrigerator that can achieve -40 C or even lower temperatures. It is widely used in laboratories and hospitals to store biological samples.

Although some models come with only a single powerful compressor, most ultra low temperature freezers boast a cascade refrigeration system that features two cascade compressors for ultra low temperatures.

These compressors use various refrigerants, which are cooling agents responsible for absorbing the heat and generating cool air. Refrigerants used in ULT freezers have low critical pressure and high critical temperature.
