Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), also known as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), is a form of non-invasive brain stimulation in which a changing magnetic field is used to induce an electric current in a specific area of the brain through electromagnetic induction. The magnetic field easily penetrates through the skin, skull, and soft tissue to reach the cortex, and the strength of the magnetic field is high. The use of magnetic fields is safe, pain-free, and requires no additional patient preparation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) performed over a long period of time (approximately 10 - 40 min) can modulate cortical excitability. For example, the excitability of neurons can be increased by high-frequency stimulation or decreased by low-frequency stimulation. Magnetic stimulation has been shown to be therapeutic in depressive disorders.
